Mars is probably the planet in the solar system that has fascinated us humans the most. Until the 1960s, there were speculations that life could be found on Mars. These speculations were based, among other things, on the Martian canals discovered by the Italian astronomer Chiaparelli, whose non-existence was soon proven by more advanced terrestrial viewing scopes.
Even today, the red planet, which the ancient Greeks believed to be the embodiment of the god of war, frequently makes headlines. A few years ago, for example, it was believed that traces of life had been discovered in a meteor from Mars, but this turned out to be highly dubious.
The landing of the Pathfinder space probe provided new, breathtaking images that were seen around the world. Some of these images, together with photographs provided by the Hubble Space Telescope and other NASA facilities, can be found on this informative poster about Mars.
We have traced some of NASA's important spacecraft and probes. Accompanying texts provide information on geography, Martian weather, moons, etc.
